100th Anniversary

January 9th 2013 – here’s a slideshow containing some group photos that were taken at the Highlands United Church’s 100th Anniversary Dinner on Saturday, November 9th. There are some real gems here, showing our friends and families having a good time. The band providing the music is the Acoustiholics, with congregant Vince Anderson on guitar.

February 15th 2012 – Provided by Joan Bensted, a collection of photographs – old Sunday School classes, the UCW catering committee, the Quilters, and the Welcome Committee from the 1940′s, 50′s and 60′s. Only the first of an ongoing submission. These are our grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, siblings and cousins from unguarded moments years ago. Enjoy!

January 31st 2012 – Found in the archives of a church member – the 1953 Highlands Building Fund Campaign booklet!

This booklet was published sometime before 1953, to develop interest in a project to put a large addition onto the west and south sides of the church, expanding the area available for the Sunday School and providing additional meeting and event space for the growing congregation.

Previous to this, the Church Sunday School classes had to meet in any spare nooks and crannies of the church and the Manse – the choir loft, the kitchen, and the unheated Manse basement. It is difficult today to identify with the spirit that undertook such hardship in the name of Spiritual teaching.

The booklet is full of photographs in beautiful high resolution, showing the faces of some current members of the congregation and their parents. Take a look through the booklet and see if you recognize anyone. The booklet also contains the original architectural plans and drawings for what would soon become the Stanley Miller hall, the Upper Hall, and the Narthex (lobby) of the present-day church.
